The hind was the first helicopter to enter service with the Russian Air Force as an assault transport and gunship.

This helicopter saw extensive combat action during the Afghan-Soviet war. It dominated the skies until the introduction of the Stinger man portable missile system, which was very successful in shooting the Mi-24s down.
